Beef Bone Broth Video

By Jessica Campbell, MS, FNTP

This is the 1 min how to video you've been asking for. Don't let bone broth confuse you or break the bank. It's cheap to buy bones, super easy to throw them in a pot, and fool proof if you check out my Beef Bone Broth Video.

The most important advice I can share with you is to source your bones from a clean, pastured animal that roamed the fields eating grass in an un-stressful environment. Check out your health food store, local butcher, meat CSA, or farmer's market and get to know who's raising your animals.

When bones are boiled down, they release minerals such as calcium and magnesium, collagen, proline, glycine, and glutamine in their pure form; better than any supplement in the store. These nutrients improve your immune system, can heal a "leaky gut", reduce allergies, and promote weight loss.

Store bought stocks are often made with bouillon cubes full of sugar, sodium, and MSG. Luckily, bone broth is a popular item and can be found sourced from pastured animals online. However, those delicious stocks may cost a small fortune.

Make this simple stock in your slow cooker and you can leave it overnight or all day while you are at work. Store it in the fridge for up to 7 days. Bring it back to a boil for 3 minutes to be safe and make your favorite soup or drink it like a tea.

Don't forget the salt!

Adding a sea salt will add more minerals to your broth, but wait until the end to season to taste. Bones will leach more minerals into pure water than they will into salty water.

I made this recipe as simple as it could be, but you can make yours as fancy as you like. For a more Vietnamese Pho style, add cardamom pods and a star of anise to your pot. For Thai flavors add a lemongrass stalk and slice of ginger. Want to make an Italian dish later, try Bay leaf, garlic, and parsley stems.

If you have a favorite combination, please tell us in the comments below. Thanks for  sharing!
