Step 3 to Perfect Health: Eat More Mud


Yeah I said it, eat more mud. No, I am not going crazy; I simply put one and one together and realized that the two most important elements for your health, when combined, make mud.


When I was a kid we played outside and the adults told us "God made dirt and dirt don't hurt!" However, when my children play in the mud nowadays, neighbors cringe and act like I am raising two young piglets. Or they smile and run their children's hands under some hand sanitizer.

No More Hand Sanitizer!!!

We need to stop the madness. Dr. Daphne Miller in her book Farmacology explains how she sends children with allergies to a farm rather than recommending medication. She claims that it is the absence of soil being ingested that is harming our bodies. Instead of acquiring the millions of beneficial microbial bacteria from the dirt on a farm, we are using anti-bacterials to "kill the germs." We have got this all wrong! We are we wiping out entire colonies of beneficial bacteria and destroying our innate immune system.

This is an easy fix, if there ever was one. Start letting your kids play in the dirt, and you should join them. Instead of fighting the bacteria, realize that we are made of bacteria and the more beneficial bacteria in our systems, the healthier our immune system will be.

As a holistic nutritionist, I am often recommending probiotics to help people repopulate their damaged gut bacteria. In fact, there are numerous new SOIL based probiotics. People take bentonite clay and diatomaceous earth to kill off candida, and activated charcoal to get rid of poisons. In essence we are taking DIRT supplements and spending a ton of money on them. Wouldn't it be more fun and economical to go play in the dirt?


So Why Mud?

That's easy, the one thing dirt needs to become mud is water and we need more water too. I am shocked at how many times I hear people describe the drought they see around them in California, however they do not see the drought in their own bodies.

Are You Drinking Enough Water?

The appropriate amount of water can be found in this simple equation. Divide your body weight in half and drink that many ounces of water every day. If you drink a diuretic such as juice, coffee, tea, soda, or basically anything else, replace that drink with water and add that in. Herbal tea and bone broth can count towards your daily portion.

Here are the signs of mild dehydration and more importantly symptoms that can often be reversed with proper hydration.

Mild Symptoms of Dehydration

  • Headache
  • Cramps
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
